Gobi has also been getting English lessons from a Chinese translator, who was drafted in to try to teach commands such as “sit” in English.

As part of the fun, she also donned a Harry Potter-style scarf and glasses – and even got a graduation certificate.

Gobi was rescued and brought to Scotland by Dion Leonard after she followed him during a 250km marathon in China.

Dion, who is originally from Australia but now lives in Edinburgh, said the classes were great fun despite Gobi being only interested in toys and food.

Gobi can be seen sat Dion’s lap while being taught translations for apple, ball and cat – perking her ears up only when she spots her pink toy.

She is then captured looking around the room while a notepad with her name on it is shown in the background surrounded by English language books.

Hilariously, Dion and the translator are both shown sat down, repeatedly asking the reluctant pooch to sit. Chinese food restaurants around me Gobi ignores the command in English and Chinese as she just stands in between them wagging her tail.

Speaking today, the 42-year-old said: “We should’ve just taken her to dog obedience classes to be honest.

“She understands me because we’ve spent so much time together but you can tell when the translator was speaking in Chinese she understood it a bit more.

“Her ball had to get scrapped half way through because it just rules her life and she was constantly looking for it.”

Gobi, who is aged between 18 months and three-years-old, met Dion during a seven day 250km ultra marathon across the Chinese Gobi Desert.

She continued to run 125km of the race in the toughest of conditions where the pair formed an unlikely bond sparking Dion to vow to bring Gobi back home to Edinburgh with him.

A crowdfunding page to pay for the fees to get Gobi over to the UK was set up raising almost ?40,000 with any leftover funds going to charity.

After almost four months of quarantine, Gobi flew back into the UK early last month where she met her new owner and Dion’s wife, Lucja and her new sister – a rag doll cat named Lara.

Dion added: “She’s settling in really well here. Food restaurants that deliver We live pretty close to Arthur’s Seat so she goes for walks there every day which she loves.
