Plenty of festive cheer is hoped to fill amsterdam on st. Patrick’s day through a new event geared toward raising a pint in local establishments.

The amsterdam recreation department will present the inaugural st. Paddy’s day pub hop from 1 to 9 p.M. Saturday, which includes 18 participating businesses throughout the city.

Danielle whelly, assistant director of the recreation department, said the city wanted to hold an event to promote a broader range of businesses because many activities are centered around the south side.

“it’s really nice to have something that’s not just in one area of town, but promotes the entire city,” she said. “we’re hoping to showcase our community to visitors and to residents who may have never been inside of certain establishments, or they don’t really know what amsterdam has to offer.”

A stamp card can be picked up at the irish american club after 1 p.M.

And attendees can receive a stamp for visiting each of the participating businesses. Designated drivers can receive a wristband when picking up their stamp card, which provides them with free soft drinks at all participating locations. Attendees who visit at least 10 places can drop off their card before 9 p.M. At the club to be entered into the raffle.

“every place that you go to you’ll get your card stamped as proof that you were there, so you don’t need to buy a drink or anything to get a stamp,” whelly said. “there are 18 bars so obviously not every person is gonna hit every single bar. … we’re trying to help each place by enticing people to go from place to place instead of just picking their favorite bar or restaurant and hanging out there.”

Whelly said the amount of participating businesses surpassed what event organizers had anticipated. The stamp card lists specials offered at each establishment.

“it kind of just grew as different business owners and people found out about it,” whelly said. “they are all offering their own little mini events going on inside of each establishment, with music, food and drink specials.”

Whelly said event sponsors, such as jackson hewitt tax service, allowed for the city to rent a trolley service, which will stop at various locations.Participating businesses A shuttle bus service is also planned to be provided. A complete list of stops is listed on the facebook page for the event.

Amsterdam police chief gregory culick said officers do not plan to intervene with the event unless necessary. He said shuttle vehicles will not have a police presence unless passengers get unruly or troublesome.

“we don’t want to be a fly in the ointment, so we’re gonna just let everybody have a good time,” he said. “if it gets out of hand, we’re going to have an officer assigned to ride [on the bus or trolley], but we’re hoping that it doesn’t get to that point. We’re hoping that everybody just behaves and has a good time.”

Police will conduct an enhanced enforcement effort targeting impaired drivers on st.Participating businesses patrick’s day, according to culick. He urged the public to drink responsibly and have a designated driver.
