Andy’s cup upset, 30 years on peruvian recipes in english

As has been the case this week, in the lead-up to the 30th anniversary of the day the jim cerchi-trained 125/1 shot played the role of party pooper in what had been promoted as a match race between vo rogue and bonecrusher.

"I was out for dinner after the races that night and all of a sudden I was off to the hospital. At around two or three in the morning ben was born.

Thomson was one of the central figures in what, along with lonhro’s off-the-canvas victory, stands out as the most famous editions of the australian cup since the flemington 2000-metre event settled as a weight-for-age race in 1987.

The first one back at WFA was won by the previous year’s cox plate winner, kiwi champion bonecrusher, in stirring style over reigning melbourne cup champion at talaq, in a time of 2:05.6.Thomson said

Earlier that day vo rogue, then a relatively unknown queensland three-year-old, thumped his rivals in the creswick stakes over the same trip almost five seconds faster (2:00.7).

Twelve months on, with bonecrusher having won his only two lead-up runs after missing the spring of 1987 and vo rogue having elevated himself to bona fide weight-for-age star, the $500,000 australian cup was expected to go to one of the pair.

Vo rogue, off wins in the william reid stakes, orr stakes, blamey stakes, st george stakes and futurity stakes, was sent out the even-money favourite with bonecrusher at 5/2 ($3.50).

Everyone was expected to take a side with vo rogue fans sporting ‘go vo go’ badges and ‘crush ’em ‘crusher’ the slogan for those in the alternate camp.Small said

Queensland-based cyril small, who rode the vic rail-trained vo rogue, fondly recalled the build-up to the meeting, which back then was held on the monday of the long weekend.

"It was a very well-promoted clash," small said. "The year before bonecrusher won the australian cup and vo rogue won a three-year-old race over the same journey in much faster time.

Despite that, vo rogue did what he normally did early in the race and even at the 600m was free-wheeling along in front, un-urged by small, with rivals flailing under the whip behind him.

"He just didn’t pick up," small said. "The track was slightly rain-affected, or it wasn’t quite as hard as it normally was, and he didn’t like that at all.

Thomson said it was not until the famed flemington clock tower – around 140m from the finish line – that he might be a chance of scoring an upset in the eight-horse field.Thomson said

"I didn’t think he was any chance," thomson said. "But the race was worth quite a lot of money and when I gave him a bit of a squeeze at the 800 (metres) and he picked up I thought, ‘this might not be so bad after all, I might get a cut of the action (prizemoney)’.

"Turning in, I thought I was going to run better than fourth and then after going a little bit further, even though vo rogue was well in front halfway down the straight, I knew at least I would run second.

"But, as I got to the clock tower, I knew I was a live chance of winning the race. We picked him up and the margin was about a length-and-a-half on the line."

That was the official winning margin with bonecrusher four-and-three-quarter lengths away in third spot, around a length clear of bahrain.Small said the previous spring’s caulfield cup third placegetter cossack warrior – the 7/1 third favourite – finished fifth, with island spy (sixth), authaal (seventh) – who went on to place in the 1988 caulfield cup – and king of brooklyn (last) rounding out the field.

Thomson, who won many of the biggest races in the country – including four cox plates and a couple of caulfield cups, in addition to many international features – said it was a feature win like no other.

"Obviously I was delighted to win the race. To go out thinking that he wasn’t any chance before the race, I guess to even run a place would have been decent, but to win it was quite amazing.

The australian cup was by far the biggest of dandy andy’s 11 wins, which came from 61 starts, but it was not his only elite-level success, having also won the 1987 doomben cup.Thomson said

Small, the father of victorian jumps jockey braydon small, will not be at flemington for saturday’s race with the 59-year-old still riding and his one ride at the gold coast comes up in race 6, which is scheduled to be run just 10 minutes before the australian cup.
