Annual spring training trip included 36 area residents news, sports, jobs – the intelligencer chicken recipes for dinner easy

I heard those words two weeks ago at spring training in florida, along with 35 others from the ohio valley who spent the week of march 13-18 in the sunshine state.

That particular week was the fourth of the six weeks of spring training, and there were still a large number of minor leaguers sharing playing time with the “big leaguers.”

This marked the fourth straight year that bill bryson of uniglobe travel has arranged such a trip, and so, many of us have gotten to know the area quite well, especially the bradenton area where the pittsburgh pirates call home.

The trip had a real early start on march 13, if you happen to call 2:45 a.M. Early. Anyway. We did board a bus from the uniglobe office in wheeling. Our plane departed from pittsburgh at 5:45 a.M., so we had the opportunity to see the sun rise.Spring training our non-stop flight had us arriving in tampa shortly after 8 a.M.

We arrived via motorcoach at 10 a.M. At pirate city in bradenton.

It was at pirate city where more than 100 young prospects were engaged in different phases of the game of baseball, all hoping some day they would reach the big leagues. Of course, that same day at 29 other sites, 14 in florida and 15 in arizona, there would be similar workouts and similar hopes.

As we were leaving the pirate city complex, another bus took our spot. It was transporting atlanta braves hopefuls from orlando for a game. By the way, a few of our group did come away with a total of five baseballs which were hit over the backstop screen.

Our next stop was some 1,000 feet away at what was called mixon fruit farms, where we had lunch.American legion although march isn’t a fruit growing season, we did take a tour of the grounds to learn some of history of the orange-growing business, and also about some animals which for one reason or another would not ever be able to go back into the wilds of florida.

It was still afternoon when we arrived at silver surf resort, our home for the next five nights, where we had a chance to rest before going to a buffet supper.

The following day was the first day to witness a game. It took place in sarasota, where the baltimore orioles would host the new york yankees. It was an easy trip, as sarasota and bradenton are only some 20 miles away from each other. The motorcoach dropped us off a few steps from the main gate, and once inside the stadium we made our way to section 205, the same section we were in the previous year.West virginia the good news was our seats were in the shade throughout the game

Game 2 took us some 75 miles to port charlotte, which the tampa bay rays call home during spring training. Of course, before the rays and minnesota twins took the field, we had to have a “picnic on the patio,” which just so happened to be in the left field area. A year ago our seats were in this same area, but there was a big difference this year, that being movable umbrellas. The twins were winners over the rays by a 7-1 margin.

Well, the next day these same two teams were in action, only this time in fort myers, which is located a few miles south of port charlotte. This was another lopsided game, only it was different winner as the rays won 10-1. By the way, we lucked out again.American legion seats in the shade.

One thing a person learns there is that the pirates and the class A-advanced gulf league marauders have a great relationship. The public address announcer throughout the games talked about “togetherness” between the two operations.

Bradenton, like the pittsburgh pirates, has a pirate charities, and during our two-day visit the 50/50 drawings totaled more than $7,000 from the first game, and $8,000 from the second game. While the winners received half of the sales, the other half went to charities in the bradenton area.

The first game at LEMCO was between the twins and the pirates. Yes, this was our third straight contest involving the twins. The pirates were the winners by a score of 13-5. By the way, we celebrated that victory with a pizza party at the resort.West virginia actually, it was scheduled win or lose.

Since returning home, I have been asked several times about how the pirates will do this year. Even if you can see all 30 teams in action during spring training, you can’t tell much as most lineups change halfway through the game, no matter what the score is. In the first game, which the pirate won 13-5, we saw a total of 25 position players and six pitchers in the game. The pirates had a nine-run fourth inning. All the position starters had at least one hit in the game. Chad kuhl was the winning pitcher.

In the second game, which the red sox won 2-1, the pirates had eight hits, as did the red sox. Tyler glasnow took the loss, although he gave up only one earned run in 4.2 innings. Glasnow had six strikeouts, with his fast ball crossing the plate at 95 miles plus.Spring training
