Widely celebrated as one of the best places for dessert in Paris, Breizh Cafe in the Marais district heavily impressed us during our recent visit on our last trip. What is steak seasoning made of We accidentally stumbled across it on our way from Place des Vosges to Marche des Enfants Rouges.

You have to queue for a little while at this Breton Creperie with a Japanese touch (the owner, chef and founder, Bertrand Larcher, worked in Tokyo for some time and brought many ideas and recipes back to Paris; today, Breizh Cafe also has one outpost there and two in Brittany).

My wife ordered crepe with ginger and lemon, I ordered galette Cancale (named after the seaside town where one of the other cafes is located) with bits of smoked, cured herring and fake caviar in sour cream.

We had heard many good things about Les Papilles (French for ‘the tastebuds’) and despite our high expectations, Les Papilles was even more brilliant than we had hoped.

It starts with the friendly waiters, the lovely atmosphere in this former wine shop, and the quick service. The main course that followed, was an enormous amount of juicy and absolutely delicious braised beef of a similar style as goulash meat on a pile of tasty boiled vegetables, which – again – we served ourselves at the table, giving you the warm feeling that you’re earning your food.

The dessert was an extraordinarily nice creme caramel (I loved it and I do not even normally like sweet stuff), followed by a bit of cheese.

When researching Paris restaurants before our trip, we came across French MasterChef TV judge Yves Camdeborde’s legendary bistro Au Comptoir du Relais, which translates into ‘the bar area of the hotel Relais’. Best cut of beef for steak tips This tiny and bustling art deco restaurant belonging to the well-regarded 4-star Hotel Paris Relais Saint Germain (Camdeborde owns the whole hotel) sits in a beautiful 16 th Century building just off Boulevard Saint-Germain (Metro station Odeon) and has been celebrated as unmissable for many years. We particularly remember a number of reviews along the lines “they know they simply cannot go wrong” and thought, that’s never a good sign. We were too late to book the five-course haute-cuisine weekday dinner for a very reasonable €65. We felt that the waiters were very boss’ish, abrupt and outright rude, making it clear from the beginning that you are an uninvited guest in their house and should do as you’re told or else. Steakhouse meatpacking district When clearing dishes from our table, the waitress took the cutlery from one of the plates and dripped plenty of oil over the table and my shirt without even apologising. My wife found the fish soup maybe slightly too earthy and bitter and too bland, I personally thought it was just fine (even though not exceptional by any standard), with an unusual mix of small bits of grapefruit, lychee, chestnut, black pasta, lemon cress, broccoli and cauliflower added in addition to the usual suspects. The roasted suckling pig, served in a thick bed of lentils, was truly divine. Shortly after our visit to the Eiffel Tower, we did another tour with Flat Tire Tours, this time zigzagging through the area between the Tower, Pont Alexandre III, and the Rodin Museum (one of our top spots in Paris, which we visited directly after the Segway tour; tres romantique location, so to say).

I’m 2 metres tall and weigh over 100kg, so did at first felt rather uncomfortable entrusting my life to a wobbly, 45kg light-weight thing that sits on just two wheels and is supposed to be steered simply by me moving my heavy weight forward or backwards, left or right, on the little steering stick that is attached to the wheels and the platform between them.

The introduction and safety instruction was very short, but in Flat Tire Tours’ defence, spending more time on this would have taken the fun out of it. How to make steak tacos with cilantro and onion Nonetheless, I still had my concerns and didn’t feel 100% safe at first, it’s just such a weird thing to do. The only other time I didn’t quite feel perfectly safe, was when – being a bit too confident – I exceeded the maximum permissible speed for a second or two and was quickly slowed down by the Segway against the physical instructions I was giving to it. Different from some other Segway tours we’ve seen, Flat Tire Tours really make an effort to avoid roads and heavy traffic, where possible, so nearly all of the tour is on quiet pavements, in pedestrian zones or along the leisurely Seine riverside, where your only concern are inline skaters and playing kids. Following our climb of the Eiffel Tower and just before our Segway tour, we caught a bite at Au Petit Sud Ouest, which had impressed us with a Tripadvisor ranking of #59 out of 14,156 Paris Restaurants and a few other great reviews.

The menu is short and mainly features duck, goose, foie gras, and combinations and variations thereof.

We shared two slices of delicious foie gras pate on toasted rye bread. How to make pork steaks tender in the oven My wife enjoyed the fact you toast the slices of bread yourself in large vintage toasters that sit on each table.

My wife went for duck leg confit with potatoes and mushrooms, I went for goose leg confit. How to make flank steak tender in the oven We enjoyed the taste of the confits, even though they were far too oily for our taste, oilier than other confits we’d had in the past. We’re still wondering how this place ends up with such a great ranking.
