Stephen unwin william mcfall murder trial hears accused ate curry after torturing alleged victim – belfast live best loved slow cooker recipes book

Convicted killers stephen unwin and william john mcfall had the meal shortly before quyen ngoc nguyen was found dead on august 15 last year, newcastle crown court was told.

Jamie hill QC, prosecuting, told how text messages sent by mcfall, originally from greencastle, co antrim, made references to having a curry cooked by unwin as the vietnamese mum lay ‘dying’ on the floor nearby.

Mr hill said mcfall had sent a message to his girlfriend with an image of a curry. He said the message read ‘stil eating, lol,’ adding: “while someone you thought was dead lying on the floor you attended to your own need to have a meal?”

Mr hill asked him: “even after the horrific event which you had just witnessed?” mcfall replied: “this is horrific, of course it is.Tyne wear it is heinous.”

The jury has been told unwin, 40, and 51-year-old mcfall – known as john – had both killed vulnerable, elderly people in their own homes during burglaries.


Both served their sentences, and on their release they joined together to subject petite nail technician ms nguyen, 28, to a five hour ordeal of rape and beating in unwin’s home in shiney row, co durham, it is alleged.

She was still alive when she was driven to a remote lane, and set ablaze lying on the back seat of her audi A4 car. The court has heard that unwin killed in 1998, knocking his victim, 73, to the floor before torching his bungalow in houghton-le-spring, tyne and wear. He was released on licence in 2012.

McFall bludgeoned to death martha gilmore, 77, to death with a hammer in a raid on her home in greenisland, in 1996, hiding the weapon in a graveyard.Court heard he was sentenced to life at belfast crown court, before his release in 2010.

McFall told the jury: “I am solely responsible for the death of that lady in 1996. I was surprised in the hallway and struck out several times. For that I am truly sorry, I still think about it. Life is sacred.”

Mr hill asked: “rather than use the hammer, why did you not just run away?’ mcfall replied: “I pleaded guilty accepting full responsibility for my actions.” read more

Mr hill put to mcfall that a selfie taken after the disposal of ms nguyen’s body, showing him smiling, showed ‘the real you’ and that he ‘did not care’ about what had happened.

The two men were seen on CCTV walking from the allotments where they had allegedly dumped and set light to her vehicle. Unwin was said to have withdrawn money using her bank card within minutes of emergency services finding her body. Read more

Both men were arrested on the day her burnt-out vehicle was reported to have “exploded” by residents living close to the scene. The court heard ms nguyen met unwin when he did maintenance work on properties which she let, and were being used to grow cannabis.

In initial interviews, both he and mcfall deny any involvement in her death, before seeking to blame one another, mr hill said. Unwin, of shiney row, tyne and wear, and mcfall, of waterloo road, blackpool, deny murder and rape.
