The hideout opens as restaurant, entertainment venue news, sports, jobs – news and sentinel quick rosemary bread recipe

PARKERSBURG — on the outskirts of parkersburg, 1141 staunton turnpike to be precise, is the hideout on 47. It is a building with a long list of former tenants which have tried to either have it as a bar or a restaurant.

It was a visit to the building in which nina and paula oates, nina’s mother, visited looking to buy booths for their family-owned pastime pizza in marietta, which caused them to sit and talk, not so much about the booths but the building.

Then they talked to two family members, chris oates and brandon layman. Both are veterans but no longer active. Oates is a marine and layman, the army.

“the four of us talked about it, got the building and are turning it into an entertainment venue,” said nina. “we closed down pastime and opened here. Now, we have customers coming here from marietta for the pizza and they’re finding out we still have a lot of the same menu items here that we had there.Open comedy

“it’s taking a bit of time but we have cleaned the hideout up, started replacing items which needed replaced,” she continued. “we’re putting time, energy and money back into the business to make it into a place you want to come to enjoy a meal or be entertained.”

Since opening the hideout, it has become a stopping place for touring nationally known comics as well as local comic joel gant hosting an open mic comedy night.

Stewart huff, who has appeared on home box office, was the headliner at a march 10 event with two shows. “people started showing up at 4:30 for the 6 p.M. Show,” oates said. “but the 6 p.M. Show was capacity and there were still people wanting to get in and couldn’t,” she added in reference to the entertainment room, which seats 90.

The front portion of the hideout, which is more of the restaurant portion, seats 35 with the back patio seating 30.Open comedy she said a sound system will be added to the patio, which will bring the entertainment from the backroom to the patio.

Before the huff show, walkup tickets were available at the hideout. After its success, oates said, advance tickets will be available but reservations are needed for the show. She said the hideout is getting an online ticket site readied.

“we had been collecting non-perishable foods during the open mic comedy nights,” oates said. “but we had people bringing non-perishable to huff’s show as well.”

The next open mic comedy night is april 27 with comedy headliner mike geeter appearing the next night. Tickets for that event are $5. Geeter has appeared on comedy central.

The next open mic band night is from 7-11 p.M. April 7. Oates said the band night is good for both the band and the hideout as it “doesn’t book bands which we don’t see in person before hand.”

While there is entertainment often, oates said it is paula’s cooking and her recipe for the homemade breads, buns and pizza dough which bring people back. “fresh food is the difference in getting people into an establishment. They may stop by here for a beer but if they are here for any length of time, they’re going to get hungry,” she said. “you’ve got to feed them something.”

That’s where paula comes in. ‘never fear, mom is here.’ especially when mom is doing the cooking. “we’ve gone from mom making the bread once every other day when we first opened to having to make it a couple of times a day,” nina said. “mom is one of two who knows the recipe and she has it up here,” she said pointing to her head. “if we hire someone new, we don’t tell the recipe.” she paused and added, “I don’t know the recipe.”

Nina has a degree in health education with a minor in nutrition from coastal carolina university.Comedy night she is a 2006 marietta high school graduate. She tried to put her degree to use within the menu. “that soon faded,” she said. “that may have worked in malibu when I lived there but not here. It didn’t take long to establish what was popular.”

“there is a 10 percent discount for active duty or veteran, police or firefighters tuesday-saturday,” oates said. “we have military monday in which they receive a 20 percent discount and that includes the police and firefighters. It’s a dine in or take out only.” COMMENTS
